Fishing Second Dam in Logan Canyon

Took Ethan up to 2nd dam this last week to see if I could finally get something on a hook for him. But the fish are still winning this year so far. We were not there long enough to really try a lot of different bait though. Ethan was more interested in getting dirty on the side hill. It is going to be a blast to take him camping this year because he is so curious about everything outdoors right now.

The fish were coming to the surface the whole time were were on the boardwalk. They are feeding close to the edge here but are pretty smart cause they are fished every day. I finally found my box of flys that I tied years ago and I have a few nymphs in there that I am going to try next time I head out.

Striper Bass Fishing on Lake Powell

These pictures are from one of our fishing trips down to Lake Powell fishing for "Striper Bass". They are fun to fish for and the best part is there is no limit to how many you can catch. We hit the gas dock around 6:00 p.m. at "Hall's Crossing" as that is when they close the dock down to fueling and we could set there in our lawn chairs and be lazy fishermen. We used frozen anchovies cut in fourths and almost every cast catch a striper. The water there is between 15 to 30 feet deep. On this particular trip there were 5 of us and we caught over 100 stripers. The picture with the cooler and string lines is what it looks like when you are having fun. The cooler is full of stripers and the two string lines has double fish on every hook.

Ky's Southern Utah Muzzle Loader Hunt

The first picture of us in orange is on my brothers disability hunt up in Monte Cristo. We got to go up the week before everyone else to see if we could get after any elk. We had the elk screaming at us at night, but we couldn't entice any of them to come in during the day hours. We had a good time anyway.
The set of pictures with us in camo was on the 2007 Muzzle Loader Deer Hunt. We were hunting the southern unit on a 4 day hunt. My Brother Rick took his deer the opening morning. We knew exactly where these deer were hanging out. So I tried had my brother and Dad push them into me. I set up about 1,000 yards away on a wheel line sprinkler pipe. I watched a little 2 point walk with in 50 yards of me while watching all of the other deer about 1,000 yards away. Although it was the last day I didn't want a 2 point. When my brother and dad came over the ridge the 8 deer started to take off into the sage in the opposite direction from where I was standing. I thought the morning hunt was over. Then 1 minute later they popped back into the field on a dead run headed in my direction. I watched them head down the field just being able to see there heads pop up and down over the sage. I saw where they were headed, and took off on a run with my head hunched down to see if I could get close to where they were going to jump into the next field where I was standing. I saw them at about 250 yards from me.


I stopped and set my self up. One knee on the ground and the other as a base to rest my elbow on. They jumped the fence. There was only one buck in the 8. He looked like a decent 3 point and it was the last day so I was commited to take a shot. Once they jumped the fence they made a 90 degree turn to the left and headed straight toward me, they ran over a small stream culvert. Once they crossed the culvert, they made 90 degree turn to the right heading back in the same direction they were going in the first place. This positioned the buck perfectly broadside at about 60 yards. He wasn't going to stop so I took the shot at him on the run. BOOOOM!!! The shot felt good but I couldn't tell if I hit him because there was so much smoke from the muzzle loader. The smoke cleared about 5 seconds later. I looked for the buck but he was not there.

Questioning if I missed him and he ran down the creek bottom to safety. I watched all of the does look back for a split second and then bolt out of there. But still no buck with them. I started to head in the direction where I last saw the buck. Nothing, The brush was so tall that I couldn't see any sign of him. I looked for 5 minutes with the assistance of some spotters from above and finally found him inches from rolling into the stream. I hit him right behind the shoulder with a double lung kill. he only ran about 30 yards from where I saw him last but the brush was so tall I couldn't find him very quick. To my suprise he was a little 3X4 and was starting to fork on the side with only 3. I use a Knight .45 caliber muzzle loader with 195 grain sabot slugs and 120 grains of powder. In the 3 deer that have been taken by this gun, this was the only deer that took another step after getting hit. The knock down power of these muzzle loaders are unbelievable. I would recommend the muzzle loader hunt to anyone that is interested in hunting. This was a great hunt and tons of memories were made. Ky

Fishing on First Dam

This is from today so I am all caught up now. I told Amy last week that I was going fishing no matter what. Then I found out a snow storm was coming in. But when I woke up this morning I said the hell with it and went. But you can see from these two pictures how fast the weather changed on me. The pictures are only about an hour apart. These shots are from the lower end of the dam by the spillway. The fish were there but I came up empty. I am fishing the hard way by using only artificial bait. I tried artificial red, pink and sparkle worms, I tried dry flies, I tried a spinner, I tried powerbait and came up empty. But it was good to get out again, I have the worse case of spring fever right now and this few hours did the trick.

Hiking the Wind Caves in Logan Canyon

I took this hike in November of 07. The shot above is wind cave that the hike is named after. The shot below is a look across Logan Canyon to the Crimson Trail that runs across the length of the large rock wall. This hike took about 1:15 minutes to climb up and around :45 to get back down.

Ethan Fishing at First Dam

We took Ethan down to First Dam in Logan to let him do some fishing last fall. We had practiced casting in the house and it paid off. This is a good shot of how far he was able to cast out. He has a little push button Superman fishing pole that he uses. All of these pictures are pretty much the same thing but they turned out pretty good. We fished until it was dark and getting cold. He did not want to leave and has asked about going fishing almost every week since.
